The research is clear: the environment matters. Where children and families live, learn, work, and play affects their health. People thrive when they earn living wages and live in communities with safe affordable housing. They thrive when they have easy access to parks, playgrounds, and grocery stores selling nutritious food. People cannot thrive in unhealthy environments and are therefore suffering from the many diseases and injuries plaguing the United States, including diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, asthma, traffic injuries, and violence.
The key to sustaining positive behavior in young people is frequently reinforced encouragement from family, peers, and the community until a point is reached where self motivation becomes the main driver for action. Psychological dependency, emotional intelligence, and mental and physical capacity all play a part in determining how long it takes to develop sustained behavior changes in any given child. Positive influences are needed from the family, peers, schools, and community to foster an environment where children find it “cool” to be healthy.
